A Little Encouragement - May 21,2009

Show me the way

When we are at the crossroads, God understands. God sees the overview. Like a child who's lost, we should come humbly to our heavenly Father to ask for direction. God can reveal His will through His Word, or the wise counsel of others, or circumstances, or simply speak into our heart and mind. We may need to skip a meal, lay aside distractions, and seek God's face.

God's Word says:

"Let the morning bring me word of Your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for to You I lift up my soul." - Psalms 143:8 (New International Version)

User Manual

When a device or machine is not working the way it should - be it our computer, washing machine, or whatever - we tend to fumble around for a solution. It has been said: "If all else fails, check the user manual." Life is much the same; when things go wrong, we tend to try everything else except consult God's Word, which contains the best practices, guidelines, and instructions for proper living, success, and prosperity. Let us turn to God's Word rather than do it our way.

God's Word says:

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right." - 2 Timothy 3:16 (New Living Translation)

A Little Encouragement - May 11,2009

Ask first

Often, when faced with a problem, threat, or situation, we tend to do things our way. Rather, we should ask God for guidance before taking action, and then listen to His direction to proceed accordingly. We can regret if we seek the Lord after the fact or following the result of our hasty action. Let us ask first, and take time to hear God speak - through the counsel of others, His Word, circumstances, and obviously, His still, small voice in our heart.

God's Word says:

"David heard that the Philistines were attacking the town of Keilah and were stealing the newly harvested grain. So he asked the Lord, "Shall I go and attack the Philistines?" "Yes," the Lord answered. "Attack them and save Keilah."" - 1 Samuel 23:1-2 (Good News Translation)

5 Important Life Lessons

First Important Lesson - Cleaning Lady

During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: ‘What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?’

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name?

I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

‘Absolutely,’ said the professor. ‘In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘hello.’

I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

Second Important Lesson - Pickup In The Rain

One night, at 11:30 pm, an older African American woman was standing on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure a lashing rainstorm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride.

Soaking wet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled ’60s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab.

She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the man’s door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home. A special note was attached.

It read: “Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husband’s bedside just before he passed away. God bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others.”
Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole.

Third Important Lesson - Always Remember Those Who Serve

In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him.

“How much is an ice cream sundae?” he asked.
“Fifty cents,” replied the waitress.

The little boy pulled is hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it.
“Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream?” he inquired.

By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient.

“Thirty-five cents,” she brusquely replied.
The little boy again counted his coins.
“I’ll have the plain ice cream,” he said.

The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies.

You see, he couldn’t have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip.

Fourth Important Lesson - The Obstacle In Our Path

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way.

Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded.

After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway.

The peasant learned what few people in the world truly understand: Within every obstacle lies a golden opportunity to improve our condition.

Fifth Important Lesson - Giving When It Counts

Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness.

The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, “Yes I’ll do it if it will save her.”

As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, “Will I start to die right away?”

Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her but he had chosen to save her anyway.

Gratitude to Geir Ove Knutsen for sharing these five stories with me.

Let us all take these beautiful lessons to heart today…
1) In our life we will meet many people. All are significant. They all deserve our attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say “hello.”
2) Never pass an opportunity to serve others. Our smallest gestures showing care can affect their life profoundly.
3) Always remember those who serve you, even in the smallest way. Never take them for granted even if they take you for granted!
4) Within every obstacle lies a golden opportunity to improve our condition.
5) Give when it counts. Give without counting. Give!

A book that teaches you how to pray

Title: Targeted Prayers
Author: Benjamin Nebechukwu
Reviewer: Esther Nasikye
Price: Shs20,000
Available at: All leading bookstores
(La Fontaine, Fresh Vine, Aristoc)

Every Christian prays but not everyone has their prayers answered. The difference lies in how we pray and that is praying strategically, persistently and passionately. Prayer is like a journey that everyone must enjoy.

However, few enjoy it because they cannot identify the root cause of their problem which will help them pray strategically and therefore achieve results.

Man needs to know the purpose and benefit of something if he is to be motivated to work in order to achieve it. Targeted Prayers helps you understand the purpose and benefits of prayer, identify the root cause of your problems and helps you to pray strategically.

The format of the book is simple. It is divided into two parts. In the first part the writer discuses what prayer is, how one can maintain a praying attitude, what it means to be persistent in prayer, the power of fasting and why it is good to combine the two in order to achieve results, what targeted praying is, what prayer and faith is and why the two go hand in hand. Whereas it is true that when one is born again, they are free indeed, there are issues in their past that affect them from reaching their full potential as Christians. Such issues prevent them from reaching their destiny.

Spiritual warfare is discussed in a very informal way that with this book in your hand, you can successfully go through a deliverance session on your own. In the second part of the book, the writer highlights some of the challenges 21st century Christians face and goes ahead to offer guiding prayers (which he refers to as prayer points) to help one get out of the situation. These include witchcraft, miscarriage, marriage, marital delay, conception, academic success, business success, family and foundational problems and prayers for expectant mothers.

Other than leave you at crossroads, the prayer points help you Christian to learn how to pray and pray success. There are many positive aspects to this book. Pastor Benjamin Nebechukwu writes about prayer in a very conversational style.

It doesn’t feel like you are listening to a sermon or reviewing a church manual. His style of writing is so conversational that anyone can understand. He has powerful real life day to day anecdotes to help drive the touchy subject of prayer home.

The author obviously wants people to be free from problems that hold them down and prevents them from reaching their full potential.

The language used is simple and one does not need to read with the Bible at hand as every scripture referred to is quoted and well explained.

The difference between Targeted Prayer and other books on prayer is that the writer helps you identify your problem, and how to pray out of the situation. The fact that the issues the writer identifies and notes in his book are day to day issues mean this book cannot be a fad but will stand the test of time.

A Little Encouragement - April 20,2009

Anxiety

Whether we have been a Christian for 6 months or 60 years, we can experience anxiety. It helps to take a big breath of air, take one step back, and identify the factors causing fear or worry. We should take the matter to God, ask Him for wisdom to handle it, then thank Him for the answer. When we had seriously done that, we then release it into God's hands, and we will calm down.

God's Word says:

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6,7 (New International Version)

Practical Christianity

It's right that we love God and give our tithes. We should also be merciful and fair to others; this is when our faith becomes practical. And, this is where the believer takes off his/her saintly gown and puts on work clothes. It requires humility, but our non-believing family members, relatives, and friends will see Christ shining through us. This attitude overcomes the language barrier.

God's Word says:

"But He's already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It's quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love. And don't take yourself too seriously - take God seriously." - Micah 6:8 (The Message)

Are you thirsty?

We all know what it's like to be thirsty. Summer is around the corner - on hot days, we would quench our thirst with a cool drink. Probably, some drink a can of refreshing fruit juice, while some long to drink a coconut, yet others simply sip on iced water. Our soul also thirsts. When we are in spiritual need, our soul thirst more. It's good to thirst spiritually, and drink "living water" that the world cannot offer. Let us thirst for God's presence, let us be very thirsty.

God's Word says:

"As a deer longs for a stream of cool water, so I long for you, O God." - Psalms 42:1 (Good News Translation)

A Little Encouragement - April 16, 2009

Little foxes

Often, it's the "little foxes" that spoil our blessing - the little word said to us or by us, or the little action taken. Whatever the case is, Satan uses the little things to annoy, or discourage us. These seemingly harmless matters take our mind and heart off our focus on God and our love for people. We should value our loved ones and friends over material things; a broken heart needs care more than a broken piece of treasured item. We need to be careful, lest the evil one uses the "little foxes" to rob us of our peace and joy. Let us concentrate on what really matters.

God's Word says:

"Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our vineyards that are in bloom." - Song of Solomon 2:15 (New International Version)

It's painful

Yes, much is happening in our world that is causing hardship and pain. But, we need to know that whatever is happening, and is going to happen - God is on our side, He is for us. Let us bear the pain, with patience.

God's Word says:

"Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus." - 2 Timothy 2:3 (New International Version)

A Little Encouragement - April 14, 2009

Believe it, and take it

The fact is that the Devil has lost the War. He knows he has lost it. The trouble is we don't know this for sure - we keep listening to his lies and allow him to manipulate our emotions. Let us acknowledge this truth. We must believe what God says, not whatever Satan whispers in our ears. The Lord Jesus defeated Satan for good. The Lord has done it - it's now our call to believe it, and take hold of the blessing that the evil one seeks to rob us of.

God's Word says:

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." - Galatians 5:1 (New International Version)

A Little Encouragement - April 10,2009

Precious to the Lord

Whenever Satan causes us to doubt the goodness and faithfulness of God, let us look at the Cross. Consider the punishment that the Lord Jesus took on His body for us. It is true, the Lord loves each of us very, very, very much. In fact, He just can't get us out of His mind, and hands.

God's Word says:

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me." - Isaiah 49:15,16 (New International Version)

A Little Encouragement - April 9, 2009

Do we want more?

God is not after our money - after all, He owns all the wealth on this planet. What He wants is our heart. When God challenges us to give, it's because He wants to enlarge our heart, and pour a bigger measure of blessing into it. You see, God's intent is simple - He wants us to receive more, if that's what we also want. If we want God to release what is in His hands, we need to release what is in our hands - and, to give it cheerfully to Him.

God's Word says:

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." - Luke 6:38 (New International Version)

A Little Encouragement - April 8, 2009

Get it out of the way

If we are to allow God to develop us, and bring us to our destined blessing: sometimes, we need to "cut the anchor and throw the cargo overboard". We need to assess our life, and get rid of inappropriate values, principles, attitudes, or plain habits and associations. We need to align ourselves to God's purposes. God intends the very best for us - so, let us release that which hold us down, and sail on.

God's Word says:

"But rocky shoals prevented us from getting close. We only managed to avoid them by throwing out drift anchors. Next day, out on the high seas again and badly damaged now by the storm, we dumped the cargo overboard. The third day the sailors lightened the ship further by throwing off all the tackle and provisions." - Acts 27:17-19 (The Message)

A Little Encouragement - April 7, 2009

When a prophetic word has been spoken into our life, we need to nurture the word seed with the water of faith. If we do, we will see our prophetic journey unfold. If we don't, the word seed will not grow as intended, and we would have lost the opportunity of God's choice blessing for our life.

God's Word says:

We live by faith, not by sight." - 2 Corinthians 5:7 (New International Version)

A Little Encouragement - April 6,2009

A spiritually-refreshing weekend can renew our focus on God's Kingdom and His purposes. And, we enjoy such a time-out period. But, God wants to bless us beyond such "mountain-top" experience by taking us back down to the "valley". Because, it is in the "valley" that the rich soil of trials and testings is found. It is in the "valley" that the fruit of a Christ-like character is grown in those who pursued after their Lord on the "mountain-top". Let us be thankful to God for both the "mountain-top" and the "valley" of His choice.

God's Word says:

"But when the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Here there is no conflict with the law." - Galatians 5:22,23 (New Living Translation)

Confessions of an Ex-Yoga Teacher

Hi friends,
The popularity of yoga has grown tremendously in the last few years. There are as many types of yoga as there are centres running it. Is it alright for Christians to practise yoga? Can one just do the exercise without getting into the meditation realm? Hear it from Choy Pohshon who was once a practitioner and yoga teacher.

Choy Pohshon
Born and brought up in Ipoh, Malaysia, some fifty-six years ago, she is the youngest of nine children. At the age of three, she lost her father to cancer. Not having the financial means to do a tertiary education, she opted for a nursing course in England after her Cambridge 'O' level exams. She is married with two teenage daughters and continues to run the business of providing nursing services to hospitals, clinics, research centres and homes. She worships at Wesley Methodist Church and also serves as an altar counsellor. She has also written a book "In the Nude~Confessions of An ex-Yoga Teacher".

On Wednesday, I attended a talk by an ex-yoga teacher, Mdm Poh Shon Choy, who sold her yoga centre (earning lots of money giving yoga (lessons) and severed all ties with yoga. She urges us to inform relatives, friends, Family members, etc., NOT to get involved at all. For those who had taken up yoga lessons (hot yoga, power yoga, so on), repent and ask God for forgiveness. Many claimed that they only join to keep fit, only doing the exercise poses and not meditation.

Christians think it is ok so long as they don't participate in the Meditation part. Mdm Choy explains that the central of Yoga (originated from Hinduism) is the spirit of Kundalini (spirit of snake or cobra). Yoga poses are actually animal poses (e.g. camel, rabbit,). All these look very normal and harmless, stretching and exercising. But the danger is, once a person does such poses, the spirit of Kundalini (the snake is in a coiled position) is stimulated or aroused. As the persons goes from basic to intermediate to advance stage of yoga lessons (still not meditation yet), the coiled "snake" will be aroused further. It will rise and rise further.

There are 7 centres in the human body - starting from the navel. The final centre is the part between the eye
brows (known to many as the third eye). When the spirit is aroused to the final centre, the third eye will be opened. This is called the full enlightenment. The first thing the person sees is demons. For some, they will become insane seeing such horrifying demons. For others, they are not afraid And will have the power to fore-tell other people's health, problems, luck, etc (like a fortune teller). In fact, they manipulate and control other people. The meditation part will come in very subtle.

Mdm Choy said she was approached by a couple who found her contact from the yellow pages and told her they wanted to teach her new things about yoga. She was very keen and sat under their teaching. She learnt how to meditate and it must be done in odd hours of the day (past midnight). So she tried. She actually felt a wriggling feeling in her stomach! She also mentioned that her third eye was opened. She could see her own aura (electric fields in all human beings). Her turning point came when God caused her spiritual eyes to open - she witnessed a lady being delivered, wriggling like a snake on the floor. Mdm Choy thanked
God for being gracious to her, she took 1-2 weeks to be delivered. She knows of a lady who took 3 months to be cleansed!! It is a sad thing, there is even yoga lessons for children.

In the States, a Methodist started the Christian yoga. However, there are some believers who still continue, saying that they find no harm after doing yoga for 3 years. Mdm Choy says it is our soul that is in danger. The evil one will try all ways to ensnare/trap Christians. Someone in the class raised a question - if we have The Holy Spirit, how can the spirit of kundalini be aroused? Mdm Choy replied our God is a Holy God, the Holy Spirit will be grieved and will depart. God cannot be mocked. God's spirit left King Saul when he disobeyed God. To God, rebellion spirit is witchcraft. We are not against yoga teachers, yoga students but we are fighting against powers, principalities in the Spiritual realm. Let's be on guard, be aware!

God of the City

Hi Friends,
A good song to start for 2009. "Greater things have yet to come, greater things are still to be done in this City!"
The arrangement is quite different from the version we sang though, enjoy listening.
